OPLAN BUSOG CONTINUES (Updates for November to December 2018)

  • As of January 6, 2019, 4 children remain underweight. From a malnutrition rate of 12% as of November 2018, it is now down to 2%.
  • Highlights for this exposure include an eight-week feeding program using a peanut-based ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) as seen in the photo above.

Hypertension continues being one of the top morbidity cases in Sinai, Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga del Norte. The group continues on promoting proper lifestyle changes the hypertensives could adapt in their daily lives.

This November-December, the group were able to update the status of the 112 hypertensives based on the JNC 8 guidelines. 72 residents have uncontrolled hypertension while 17 individuals have controlled hypertension and 111 are prehypertensives. Only 52 are currently taking medications but a lot of them are mainly low adherent.

ADOLESCENT HEALTH UPDATES FROM NOVEMBER TO DECEMBER 2018

Medical students are seen here discussing about the proposed conversion of the old barangay hall to the MediSinai Wellness Center. In the meeting, the medical students proposed the conversion of rooms within the structure to cater pregnant mothers, children, adolescents, and out-of-school youth. In the proposal, the first floor will be converted into a room where the assigned midwife and nurse of Barangay Sinai will conduct health teachings, immunization, and pre-natal check-ups. Also, the second floor will also be converted as a classroom for the out-of-school youth currently enrolled in DepEd’s “Alternative Learning System” program.

Medical students conducted a meeting where they presented the budget proposal and the tentative floor plan to a representative of the Local Government Unit of Sergio Osmeña. In the meeting, the local government unit addressed the issue about funding and initially decided to provide Php 11,000 for the initial renovation of the old barangay building.

Medical students conducted a meeting with the Rural Health Unit about the proposed plan to converting the old barangay building in barangay Sinai into an accredited adolescent friendly facility. In the meeting, the medical students asked the rural health unit on requirements for accreditation of an adolescent friendly facility which the rural health unit complied by providing the monitoring checklist for the Level 1 accreditation for an adolescent friendly facility and voiced out their support for said facility.

Consulting to a trained adolescent health care provider on the functions and practices of the Adolescent Health and Development Program.

The medical students with the aid of the RHU and one of its trained adolescent health care provider, conducted an orientation about the function and practice of the Adolescent health and development program. The RHU also provided the medical students with a copy of the manual entitled “Healthy Young Ones” which was created to guide health care providers on how to provide appropriate health care to adolescents.

Coordinate with DOH for acquisition of adolescent health-related IEC materials.

In order to push the Department of Health’s agenda on the Adolescent Health and Development Program, the medical students reached out to the provincial office of the Department of Health to be partners in the effort to bringing adolescent health in Barangay Sinai. The provincial office of the Department of Health will be tasked in accrediting the soon to rise MediSinai Wellness Center that will be tasked in delivering health care to this age group.

The medical students consulted with the provincial office of the department of health (DOH) regarding the accreditation process for an adolescent friendly facility. The office gave the medical students the memorandum letter from the DOH about prioritizing the AHDP within the Region IX. Also, the office gave monitoring checklist to the medical students in order to guide them on the requirements for the accreditation of a adolescent friendly facility.

Conduction series of focus group discussion on topics regarding marriage, teenage pregnancy, and availing of health services.

A series of focus group discussions were initiated by the medical students to gather data about the overall idea on adolescent mothers’ thoughts and experiences on pre-natal care and delivery as well as other health-related services. This was initiated so that the medical students can create programs that can cater the increasing numbers of teenage pregnancy within the community.
